Furthermore, of the allowable ducting, each has its own set of benefits and drawbacks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two options when it comes to bathroom fan ducts: flexible and rigid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We look at both options in this article. A rigid duct will move air more efficiently and can be used over longer distances, but it is costly and hard to install. Insulated ducting (flexible or rigid) is always better than uninsulated.<\/strong> <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"flexible-duct-for-bathroom-fan\">Flexible Duct for Bathroom Fan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While not all of your home&rsquo;s ventilation systems can use flexible duct (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/flex-pvc-duct-range-hood\/\">range hoods<\/a> and dryers require smooth ducting), this product is perfectly acceptable to use for a bathroom fan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As is true with every type of duct, there are benefits and drawbacks to using flexible ducting (the pros and cons for flexible ducts are discussed further down).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of flexible ducting, the benefits are believed to outweigh the drawbacks in most situations, which is why flexible duct is so commonly used for this purpose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"729\" src=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling.jpg\" alt=\"Man installing flexible duct in the ceiling\" class=\"wp-image-33137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling-768x560.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling-960x700.jpg 960w, https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling-150x109.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) calc(100vw - 24px), 720px\"><\/noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"729\" src=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Man installing flexible duct in the ceiling\" class=\"wp-image-33137 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling.jpg.webp 1000w, https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling-300x219.jpg.webp 300w, https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling-768x560.jpg.webp 768w, https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling-960x700.jpg.webp 960w, https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling-150x109.jpg.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) calc(100vw - 24px), 720px\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Man-installing-flexible-duct-in-the-ceiling.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-2\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, it&rsquo;s all well and good to say that flexible duct will do the job, <strong>but what does the building code say?<\/strong> In my experience, the internet is filled with advice that actually contradicts acceptable practice and legally-binding codes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"flexible-duct-for-bathroom-fan-is-approved-by-building-codes\">Flexible Duct for Bathroom Fan Approved by Code<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/codes.iccsafe.org\/content\/IRC2021P2\/chapter-15-exhaust-systems\" target=\"_blank\">Chapter 15<\/a> of the International Residential Code (IRC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&ldquo;is specific to exhaust systems related to clothes dryers, domestic cooking, toilet rooms, bathrooms and whole-house ventilation systems.&rdquo;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/codes.iccsafe.org\/content\/IRC2021P2\/chapter-15-exhaust-systems#IRC2021P2_Pt05_Ch15_SecM1504\" target=\"_blank\">Section M1504<\/a> discusses exhaust ducts and exhaust openings. While there is no line stating that you can use flexible duct, they include &ldquo;flex duct&rdquo; as a duct type in their table of allowable duct lengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This indicates that they can be used, although the run length is controlled to limit the issues that arise from using flexible ducting materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"flexible-duct-materials\">Flexible Duct Materials<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The flexible ducts can be made from fiberglass, plastic, or metal. However, you should try to <strong>avoid cheap aluminum ducting<\/strong> because it tears very easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, it&rsquo;s very common for the thin aluminum duct to be damaged during installation. The exhausted, moisture-laden bathroom air cools and condenses, leading to <strong>leaking vents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, it will take <strong>longer for steam to leave your bathroom<\/strong>, allowing it to wreak the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/why-no-ventilation-bathroom-terrible\/\">havoc<\/a> you were trying to avoid by installing the bathroom fan in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Often the Cheapest Option<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For many people, the most alluring aspect of flexible ducting for a bathroom fan is probably the cost. <strong>Even the higher quality flexible ducting is significantly less expensive than rigid metal ducting.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You save further on <strong>labor costs<\/strong> because it is easier and, therefore, cheaper to install, and you don&rsquo;t have to buy the adaptors and joints required to create bends with rigid ducts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"drawbacks-of-flexible-duct-for-bathroom-fan\">Drawbacks of Flexible Duct for Bathroom Fan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of exhaust ducting in a bathroom is to carry the warm and moist air <a data-lasso-id=\"1370\" href=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/does-a-bathroom-fan-need-to-vent-outside\/\">out of the bathroom and release it outside<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This prevents moisture from building up in the bathroom structures and surfaces and causing rot, <a data-lasso-id=\"1371\" href=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/how-to-prevent-mold-in-the-bathroom-three-steps-to-keep-mold-away\/#What_are_the_different_types_of_mold\">mold<\/a>, mildew, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two factors whereby flexible ducting is not the most effective type of ducting for this purpose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"increased-friction\">Increased Friction<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>ridges<\/strong> found on the inner walls of flexible ducts create <strong>airflow turbulence<\/strong>. This means that you have to <strong>check them for leaks more regularly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shorter Duct Runs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The ridged nature of flexible ducts and the loss of airflow velocity that comes with it means that there is more restriction of the length of the duct run between the fan and the external vent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be limiting depending on where your bathroom is located in the house, the space available through which the duct can pass, and where you can\/want the external vent to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"can-you-use-insulated-flexible-duct-for-bathroom-fan\">Can You Use Insulated Flexi Duct for Bathroom Fan?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <strong>two ways to get insulated ducts<\/strong>. One way is to buy flexible ducting and then insulate it yourself. The other is to buy flexible ducting that has already been insulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In either case, using insulated ducting with bathroom fans is not only allowed, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/should-exhaust-duct-be-insulated\/\">recommended<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pre-insulated ducting is certainly the easier of the two options except when it comes to cutting the duct. In such cases, the uninsulated material is better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since leaving excess ducting curled up along the run has the potential to reduce the efficiency of the ventilation system or even make it non-compliant with building codes, cutting is not something that can be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, in some situations, the amount of cutting required is insufficient to warrant the extra effort of insulating the ducts yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend using an uninsulated PVC-covered duct, like the one sold by AC Infinity, and then insulating it using a cotton duct wrap. 24px), 720px\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/thetibble.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Rigid-ducting-and-elbow-pipe.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-10\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason why it is not the most commonly used ducting has to do with its drawbacks, which we will discuss in a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, let&rsquo;s make sure that rigid ducting is legal to use for bathroom fans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rigid-duct-for-bathroom-fan-is-approved-by-building-codes\">Rigid Duct for Bathroom Fan Approved by Code<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As with flexible duct, there is no specific regulation in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/codes.iccsafe.org\/content\/IRC2021P2\/chapter-15-exhaust-systems#IRC2021P2_Pt05_Ch15_SecM1504\" target=\"_blank\">Section M1504<\/a> of the IRC&nbsp;stating that you can or can&rsquo;t use rigid ducting for bathroom fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the code does include &ldquo;smooth-wall duct&rdquo; as a duct type in their table of allowable duct lengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smooth-wall duct refers to rigid ducting because flexible ducting will always have the ridges created by the concertina design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"benefits-of-rigid-duct-for-bathroom-fan\">Benefits of Rigid Duct for Bathroom Fan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smooth Inner Walls<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Rigid ducting is typically made from sheets of stainless steel metal (although certain plastic ducting is considered to be rigid ducting), and so it has smooth inner walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The smooth walls create much <strong>less turbulence<\/strong> than the ridged walls of flexible ducting, so there is <strong>less pressure lost<\/strong> in rigid ducts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also <strong>fewer places where moisture from the air can collect and build up<\/strong> in the ducts. Unjointed curves are better than jointed versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Less Susceptible to Damage<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Rigid ducts are <strong>harder to perforate and compress<\/strong>, making them less susceptible to damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The metal is thicker than flexible ducting, meaning that more force is needed to break through the surface or deform the shape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The durability of rigid ducting also gives them <strong>longevity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lower Maintenance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Rigid ducts are <strong>low maintenance<\/strong>. You will have to insert elbows and joins to move around obstacles and turn corners.
